Meet the staff

  • REV. Eric porterfield

    senior minister

Eric Porterfield, along with his wife, Alicia, joined the Fifth Avenue staff in August 2016.  They have three wonderful boys (Davis, Luke, and Thomas) who are the joy of their lives.  A native of North Carolina, Eris is busy blending John Denver's "Country Roads" with James Taylor's "Carolina In My Mind" and liking the mix.  He grew up in Greensboro, NC, graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, where he played on the basketball team, and somehow graduated from Duke Divinity School (MDiv, ThM) while never once ceasing to be a North Carolina Tar Heel fan.

Prior to joining Fifth Avenue Baptist, Eric served as Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church, Sanford, NC (1997-2007), and Senior Pastor at Winter Park Baptist Church, Wilimington, NC (2007-2016).

  • rev. Alicia Porterfield

    associate minister for adult education

Alicia joined the ministerial team at Fifth Avenue Baptist along with her husband, Eric, in August 2016.  A Georgia native and University of Georgia graduate, Alicia originally planned to teach English literature at the high school and college levels -- but God had other plans!  While serving at the BSU at UGA and as a summer missionary, Alicia experienced an unfolding call to ministry.  Stepping out on faith, she headed to the Divinity School at Duke University the fall of 1994, where she met Eric Porterfield, a North Carolina boy.  They married a year and a half later and moved to Sanford, NC, where Eric served as senior pastor at the First Baptist Church and Alicia completed two years of chaplaincy training, served as chaplain for six years at Quail Haven Retirement Village, and had three baby boys in five years.

The growing family then moved to Wilmington, NC, where Alicia wrote adult Sunday School, Bible Study, and Missions curriculum and served as a supply preacher, retreat leader, Christian coach, and interim pastor of First Baptist Church Carolina Beach, NC.  Sensing a call to serve together, Eric and Alicia began praying and God answered that prayer through Fifth Avenue Baptist.  Alicia enjoys learning and laughing with their three sports-minded boys, Davis (15), Luke (13), and Thomas (11).  In her few spare moments, Alicia likes to read, write, sing, and explore her new hometown.
